The Fahr Beyond Expert Panel

The Fahr Beyond Expert Panel is a group of internationally renowned clinicians who are research-active in the field of Fahr's Disease/Primary Familial Brain Calcification/Primary Brain Calcification. The panel meets once or twice a year to help shape the research-informed output of Fahr Beyond and help us direct the efforts that will help us support patients and their families most effectively.

Professor Kailash Bhatia - Expert Panel Chair

 

Kailash Bhatia is a Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Department of Clinical and Movement Neuroscience of the Institute of Neurology, UCL, Queen Square, London. Prof. Bhatia has been an active member of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) over the past 22 years and has served on various committees. He was privileged to receive honorary membership of the MDS in 2021. He was also honoured to be invited to deliver the Stanley Fahn Oration in 2022 at the MDS congress in Madrid. He is EAN (European Academy of Neurology) President Elect, and the current co-chair of the EAN Coordinating Panel on Rare Diseases and served as the special EAN liaison for the EAN/IAN (Indian Academy of Neurology) collaboration in 2021-22.

Dr Alexander Balck

 

Dr Alexander Balck is a Clinical Scientist and Research Fellow at the Institute of Neurogenetics and Department of Neurology at the University of Lübeck, Germany.

His research focuses on the genetics/metabolomics of Parkinson’s disease and Primary Familial Brain Calcification (PFBC). He is a member of the Fahr Beyond Expert Panel and is involved in the international consensus on what the disease is. His other interests include the genetics of Parkinson’s disease, genetic movement disorders, twin studies, and rare neurological diseases.

Dr Amit Batla

Dr Amit Batla is a Clinical Associate Professor ( teaching) at the Department of Clinical and Movement Neuroscience, Faculty of Brain Science at University College London. Amit is a movement disorders specialist and Honorary Consultant Neurologist in the Movement Disorders Clinic at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London; and a movement disorders specialist and Consultant Neurologist, Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. He has published numerous articles on PFBC/Fahr's Disease and other Movement Disorders. He is also the London site Principal Investigator for the CALCIFADE study.

Dr Francesca Magrinelli

Dr Francesca Magrinelli is a Senior Clinical Research Fellow and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, University College London, and the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, London.

She has a clinical and scientific expertise in movement disorders and neurogenetics of movement disorders and neurodegeneration. Her research mainly focuses on gene discovery and validation, deep pheno-genotyping, genotype-phenotype correlations, and experimental approaches towards precision medicine. She recently identified PSMF1 as a new gene for early-onset Parkinson’s disease/parkinsonism. She has an interest in genetics of iron and calcium brain deposition.

Professor Gaël Nicholas

Professor. Gaël Nicolas, MD, PhD, is a neurogeneticist working in the university hospital of Rouen (Normandy, France). He is an expert clinician and lab scientist in rare neurological diseases. He is the head of the national reference laboratories for primary brain calcification (PBC) and early-onset Alzheimer's disease, and the head of the clinical reference centre for rare neurogenetic diseases in Rouen, which is the unique reference centre in France for PBC. He leads the "Genomics for Brain Disorders" research team devoted to research on PBC, Alzheimer's disease, and other neurological disorders. He identified the second PBC causal gene, PDGFRB, and contributed to the identification of 3 additional genes. His research contributed to describing the clinical and radiological aspects of PBC.
